Biosphere reserves are areas of world class natural value, recognised by UNESCO, where the interaction between people and the environment can be sustainably maintained to the benefit of both.
The three main aims are: conservation, learning and research and sustainable development. The sites are divided into three zones the central zone being the core environmental natural habitat, the buffer zone which surounds and supports the core zone and a transitional area where the surrounding community can benefit or learn from the enhanced environmental quality of the area.
